Utility data sharing FAQs

Southwestern Electric Power Company now offers a way for external companies to request your utility data (e.g. your utility bills, smart meter intervals, account details, etc.) from you with your consent. Often companies need to request this data in order to assess whether your home or business is right for energy efficiency or distributed energy project or to manage an existing energy device installed in your home or business.

When you authorize data access to a third party company, we will provide them download links to the specific types of utility data you authorized for however long you authorized. Our data sharing system is operated by UtilityAPI and is compliant with the U.S. Department of Energy's DataGuard Energy Data Privacy Program and Green Button Connect My Data.

This data sharing program is entirely opt-in. You can see and revoke any of your authorizations for data sharing at any time via your My Approved Companies dashboard.

When you are sent an authorization request link from a third party, click a button to authorize in a third party application, or click on the data sharing link for a third party in our Directory, you will be taken through a few simple online steps to authorize data sharing with that third party:

We will ask you to login through the utility online portal.

Step 1: Log in to your online account.

You will be asked to authorize the scope of data sharing.

Step 2: Review and authorize the scope of data to be shared with the relevant third party.

You will be emailed a receipt (you can revoke access at any time).

Step 3: Your data has now been shared with the selected third party.

If you decide to stop an authorization before it expires, you can revoke any authorization at any time from your My Approved Companies dashboard or by clicking on the link in your authorization receipt we emailed you when you authorized and revoking from that receipt webpage.

NOTE: Revoking an authorization only cuts off the third party company from further access to your data. However, during the time your authorization was active, they may have downloaded your data before you revoked. If you want them delete any of your data they downloaded, you need to contact them directly (we included contact information for them in your authorization receipt email).

If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback around this data sharing program, you can contact us via our customer support form or email support@swepco.utilityapi.net.
